Observation 6 - 18/11/21

Subject (Practical or Theory): Practical

Class Profile & Details: 6 LCA, mixed gender mixed ability, 8 students

Duration of Lesson: Single (1 hour)

Professional teaching skills and ability

  • Using their skills to assist students - using a ruler / using their knowledge of graphic design to help students arrange text in their poster compositions

  • Great rapport with students - in spite of students challenging the teacher + being disruptive, still a friendly dynamic as teacher encourages students to focus

Classroom management

  • Constant engagement with students - not leaving them to their own devices, keeping them focused on task + making sure they understand

  • Differentiating for each student - one student working by herself on a painting - coming around to her periodically to give advice / praise

  • Confiscation of inappropriate materials students have in class

·

Presentation of learning content

  • Step by step instruction to students individually who weren’t focused previously

  • Example work on whiteboard + physical copy for teacher to describe to students what success criteria are (copying the style of chosen artist / illustrator, making text to describe themes)

Effectiveness of planning

  • Entry system - students folders kept in a crate at the back of the classroom (so students don’t lose their work / forget to bring them in)

  • Plenty of resources avail able to give students a variety of choices to work from different reference images / styles of different artists / use different materials (pencils/markers etc.)

Assessment and evaluation of pupils work in class

  • Encouragement + praise given to students working on tasks

  • Asking students questions about their work - what aspects of chosen artists style did they emulate? What text was chosen? How are they arranging their posters

Any additional comments on what you learned from the observation class?

Was very useful to see how this teacher managed + worked with a disruptive class - creating a good rapport with students was essential to get them to engage with learning content + activities

Small class size also helped with creating a good class dynamic between students + teacher - communication + cooperation to work through project
