Japonism: Tracing the Influence of Japanese Art on the work of Mary Cassatt
In researching the influence of Japanese art on the Impressionist movement in Europe, I shifted to a critical lens after reading about Orientalism and Cultural Appropriation that was a staple of this time period as artists coming to visit Japan from Europe were inspired to exoticise and appropriate the style and subject matter of woodblock prints.
