Subject (Practical or Theory): Theory - Gaeilge (aural exam)
Class Profile & Details: 6th year class, higher + ordinary level, 16 students, mixed gender
Duration of Lesson: Single (1 hour)
Professional teaching skills and ability
Strong sense of mutual respect between students and teacher
Good working rapport within class
Sense of importance / urgency for students to focus on listening exam
Classroom management
Assertive over class, but not authoritarian - voicing the need for quiet as all need to hear
Classroom is sometimes separated by a movable wall, but this lesson it wasn't up so desks were very widely spread out - harder for students at the back to see / hear, but also less likely for disruptions as students are less able to talk to each other.
·
Presentation of learning content
Lights off, listening exam questions on board
Zooming in on each question for students to take down, freezing projector to play audio
All other books + materials to be put away during listening exam
Effectiveness of planning
Slow entry system due to students coming in at different times from different areas of the school - less able to “command” students to be on time than junior students as they are more mature and less scared of figures of authority - late to start listening exam, so class was unable to correct their answers in this class
A lot of maneuvers involved in moving to each question + playing each track - freezing / playing projector, zooming in + out, replaying audio clips
Assessment and evaluation of pupils work in class
No assessment of students answers in this class as there was no time left - will complete in next lesson
Gauging how well students understood questions / audio - asking class if audio should be played again
Any additional comments on what you learned from the observation class?
Different to see a class of 6th year students - bigger sense of importance to learning content / activities as it contributes to the Leaving Cert - students in this class were quite mixed between very serious + focused / putting heads down + not working - responsibility is put more on the students in senior cycle - less punishment over unfinished work / etc. as the LC is a big enough reason for most to be more focused. Reflects what I have seen to be part of the hidden curriculum / ethos of this school, which is personal responsibility when it comes to senior students.
