Questions planned prior to lesson to help engage students + drive focus of mind map - what do they want to do? what would they like to experience? what have they heard about TY? etc.
After mind map, students given used canvases from last year to paint over white for this project

Effective questioning + method (mind mapping) to get a productive conversation / discussion about art - very useful in gauging prior knowledge, abilities and desires for the class

Specific technique to painting canvases demonstrated - even brushstrokes + even application of paint - moving around to make sure students are following the right technique
Encouraging + praising students answers to mind map - using them to drive conversation forward + lead to next questions / new ideas
Any additional comments on what you learned from the observation class?
Lovely introductory lesson for this year group - good mix of questioning / some light practical work to familiarize students with the art room / gauge interests / encourage conversation between each other and with the teacher
Important to establish self to a class of students + familiarize them with the art room before diving into learning content - key skills of communicating + working with others that are needed as the class goes further into learning + activities.
