Subject (Practical or Theory): Practical - Art

Class Profile & Details: TY class, 21 students, mixed ability, mixed gender

Duration of Lesson: Single (1 hour)

Professional teaching skills and ability

  • Desire to build a rapport between students and teacher - asking questions about how students are finding the year / first week in school, who has done art previously / any siblings that have / had them as a teacher - disarming + creating a more relaxed environment

  • Trying to involve all students + encourage free conversation - emphasis on making students feel comfortable (said explicitly) + cater to their wants for Transition Year


Classroom management

  • Conversation with students as a class group - trying to keep all engaged + listening

  • Balance between relaxed conversational atmosphere and preventing behavioural issues

  • Calling upon particular students to answer questions

  • Asking students to paint over canvases with white paint - task driven + focused

Presentation of learning content

  • Mind map of students ideas on whiteboard for what they have envisioned for Transition Year Art

  • Questions planned prior to lesson to help engage students + drive focus of mind map - what do they want to do? what would they like to experience? what have they heard about TY? etc.

  • After mind map, students given used canvases from last year to paint over white for this project


Effectiveness of planning

  • Effective questioning + method (mind mapping) to get a productive conversation / discussion about art - very useful in gauging prior knowledge, abilities and desires for the class


Assessment and evaluation of pupils work in class

  • Specific technique to painting canvases demonstrated - even brushstrokes + even application of paint - moving around to make sure students are following the right technique

  • Encouraging + praising students answers to mind map - using them to drive conversation forward + lead to next questions / new ideas


Any additional comments on what you learned from the observation class?

  • Lovely introductory lesson for this year group - good mix of questioning / some light practical work to familiarize students with the art room / gauge interests / encourage conversation between each other and with the teacher

  • Important to establish self to a class of students + familiarize them with the art room before diving into learning content - key skills of communicating + working with others that are needed as the class goes further into learning + activities.
